A Whirlwind of Activity

To be honest, I am unsure where to begin.

This first week in San Cristobal de las Casas (San Cris) has been a whirlwind of activity. I went from a very large, friendly, party hostel in CDMX to a quiet, intimate, loving coworking accommodation that has very quickly made me feel like family. The best word that comes to mind is:

Blessed.

I will definitely be doing an extensive review of this accommodation in the future, but it’s going to take me some time to process and I want to do this place - and these people - justice.

How to describe San Cris? My best word is colonial. Super narrow cobblestone streets, with even narrower sidewalks barely able to handle a single pedestrian. No hand-holding couples on these sidewalks.

This last week I:

Found a gym and got in a couple workouts. San Cris sits at about 7200 ft. (2200m). I assure you that starting a squat routine at 7200 ft. will quickly show you the next level in discomfort.  I thought my chest would explode.

Went bouldering. There is a climbing gym of sorts where you enter through a black steel door into a gravel driveway, walk up a set of rickety wooden stairs, over the roof of a house (no bullshit), down a Mexican sized spiral stairway on the other end (read: my big ass nearly got stuck) and into what is essentially the backyard of a residence where a large U-shaped climbing wall has been set up.

The largest climbing shoes they had were at least two sizes too small, so I took more photos than climbing, but it was a good time nevertheless.

Went to a museum. Essentially the private home of an explorer / anthropologist nicknamed The Jaguar turned museum after his passing. Exactly what you expect a hacienda to look like. A large courtyard surrounded by different rooms. Spacious, cool, and serene.

Went to the movies. A group of us saw Dune 2 at the local Cineopolis. In English. Yes, this small mountain town has a Cineopolis. And a Walmart. And a Sam’s Club. The New World Order reaches even to the mountains of Chiapas.

Went on a picnic. El Arcotete Parque Ecoturistico is an open space with a river running through a cave where people can picnic, rock climb, and barbecue. After being in the city for the last five weeks or so, being in the solitude of the mountains was super refreshing.

Ate pizza. During the evening, I had to just sit back and marvel.

How the fuck did I end up in a hipster pizza joint in San Cristobal de las Casas, drinking micro brewed beer, with this melting pot of people, talking about uncircumsized cocks?

Because I’m fucking blessed.
